Registering the Death

The most important things to do when someone dies are to register the death and arrange the funeral. This is something we can assist you with if you are finding it difficult to cope or live away from the area.

To register a death you will need a medical certificate from the GP or Medical Practitioner who certified the death. You will need to register the death at the Registry nearest to the place of death within 5 days. An appointment will need to be made with the Registrar and you will need to have the following information:

  • The medical certificate supplied by the GP which should contain the date and place and cause of death
  • The deceased’s names and maiden name or previous names if applicable
  • The Deceased’s last address
  • The Deceased’s date of birth and place of birth
  • The Deceased’s occupation and where applicable the name and occupation of their spouse
  • Name of informant (the name of the person registering the death)
  • Confirmation of whether the deceased received a state pension or allowance

On registering the death you will be supplied with:

  • A death certificate (extra copies can be purchased at the time and it advisable to purchase some as these will be required to be registered with the deceased’s asset holders)
  • Certificate of registration of death
  • Certificate for burial or cremation (this will need to be submitted to the funeral directors)
